Shelf 6: Modernisms

There are times when I feel like these huge, challenging, profoundly rewarding novels are monuments to a lost era, which is somewhat ironic since so many of them position themselves as meditations on, as Marcel Proust phrased, temp perdu.  High modernism and its off-shoots was a largely European, largely male, enterprise, but I’ve put this list together to point in some of the vectors which parted ways with the mainstream.
