Nineties Hip Hop

The hip hop conversation at its very best. The late Eighties and early Nineties were to hip hop what the Sixties were to Rock and Soul and the Fifties were to Jazz. I lean pretty heavily toward New York and the South, but if you’re in the mood to party or chill, you’d want a bunch more West Coast than I have on this list. Dre’s Chronic tells the first part of that story as well as it can be told. S.H. Fernando’s The New Beats does a great job outlining what the conversation sounded like at the time; Oliver Wang’s Classic Material: The Hip-Hop Album Guide is equally useful for heads and newbies.
