Early Sixties Rock and Soul

Most of this shelf consists of the best compilations of the singles that made the first half of the Sixties an extraordinarily good time to have a transistor radio. A couple of the collections are hard to get—surf music and the British Invasion need attention—but if you’ve got the inclination and budget to listen your way through Time-Life’s great series on The Rock and Roll Era, and Classic Rock you’ll get everything mixed together, pretty much the way it happened. This is as good a place as any to give the shout out to Dave Marsh’s The Heart of Rock and Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made. More than any other book, it taught me how to hear the inner life of the music I’d always loved.
