Shelf 1: A Kit for Critical Thinking

For several years, I taught a course on “Critical Thinking and Expression.” I thought of the reading list as a kind of “self-defense kit,” providing students with the tools they needed to cut through the inaccuracies, distortions and (all too frequently) outright lies that deform our public discussions. These twelve books serve as a basic “tool kit” for thinking straight in the midst of the chaos.
