La Santa Cecilia – Ice El Hielo
Named for the patron saint of musicians, La Santa Celia resonates with the sounds of its native Los Angeles: cumbia, bossa nova, blues, rock, rhumba, soul, jazz, tango, ska, boleros, sprinkling in a bit of whatever new flavor’s just now taking shape. The labrynthine rhythms laid down by bassist Alex Bendaña and percussionist Miguel “Oso” Ramirez provide perfect settings for accordionist Pepe Carlos and singer Marisol “La Marisoul” Hernandez. Reflecting the breadth of its cultural heritage, La Santa Celia has recorded a set of striking cover versions of songs including Gloria Jones’ “Tainted Love,” U2’s “One,” the Califanes’ “Viento” and the Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever,” reworked as a reflection on the lives of migrant workers. Directed by Alex Rivera and produced by the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, “Ice El Hielo” confronts the impact of Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Latinas in the U.S.
