For the last half century, Chucho Valdes has been one of the guiding spirits of Afro-Cuban music. A founding member of the legendary big band Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, he moved on to found Irakere, whose fusion of jazz harmonies and dance rhythms defined post-revolutionary Cuban music. In addition to his work as bandleader, composer, arranger and a pianist who’s earned a place in the pantheon alongside Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk and Ruben Gonzalez. No one cut can do more than hint at Valdes’s range, so follow up on “Danzon” with “Bacaloa de Pan,” “Ponie La Clave” and his lovely duet with saxophonist Paquito d’Rivera on “Claudia.”
