Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra – They Came
Powerful tribute to Boricuan (Puerto Rican) culture and history from the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, directed by pianist/composer Arturo O’Farrill. Son of Cuban big band leader Chico O’Farrill, Arturo grew up in New York City, polishing his style with the Carla Bley Big Band, the Fort Apache Band, Steve Turre,Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. Taking over the leadership of his father’s orchestra in 1995, Arturo embarked on the epic project of exploring and reaffirming the Latin heritage in a series of concerts at Lincoln Center (“The Spirit of Tito Puente”), compositions (“Suite: Colombia”) and the recently released CD, Cuba: The Conversation Continues. Placing shout-outs to Roberto Clemente and Reggie Jackson alongside the shared story of “the rainbow people, “”They Came” was composed by Jason Lindner and features the turntable work of DJ Logic and spoken word lyrics by Christopher “Chilo” Cajigas.
